What is the 2020 Census?

Every 10 years, the United States Constitution requires all of us living in the United States to fill out the Census (regardless of our origins and status!). This requirement helps to provide an accurate count of all people in the country. 

 

What does this mean for Asian American Pacific Islanders?

Our community has been the fastest growing racial group in the country, and the 2020 Census is expected to show continued rapid population growth. Despite this, research done by the Census Bureau has shown that Asian American Pacific Islanders are the least familiar with the Census, and the least likely to participate. Due to these factors, it is extremely crucial that our community commits to ensuring we take a complete and accurate Census count!

So, how does taking the Census actually help our community?

Wow! The 2020 Census is really important!

When is the Census happening?

Starting in mid-March 2020, each household will receive a letter in the mail informing of the options for filling out the Census questionnaire.

That includes online (easiest option!), by phone, or by a requested paper form (mail). The letter will include your unique ID number you have to use to fill out the questionnaire.

Invitations to complete the 2020 census questionnaire online will be mailed.
Reminder postcard will be mailed.
Hardcopy census will be mailed.
Reminder letters will be mailed.
Census day!

When is the Census happening?

Starting in mid-March 2020, each household will receive an invitation letter to complete the Census questionnaire.

There are 3 options:

  1. Online (easiest option!)

  2. By phone.

  3. Mail - a requested paper form. The letter will include your unique ID number you have to use to fill out the questionnaire.

Reminder postcard will be mailed.
April 1
Hardcopy census will be mailed.
April 20 - 27
CENSUS DEADLINE
March 12-20
Reminder letters will be mailed.
March 26- April 3
CENSUS DAY
April 8 - 16
Final postcards will be mailed.
August 14

How to complete the Census

Online

For the first time, the Census form will be available to complete online in 13 languages.

Phone

The Census can be completed by phone in 13 languages including Telecommunication Device for the Deaf.

By Mail

The paper Census form will be mailed from the U.S. Census Bureau. It will be available in English and Spanish and can be mailed back to the U.S. Census Bureau.
